Grasmere Gingerbread® was not always as well known around the world as it is today. Indeed, it was developed by an unsuspecting Sarah Nelson, a hardworking house maid turned entrepreneur.

The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop

Grasmere Gingerbread® is a delicious, spicy-sweet taste sensation. A cross between a biscuit and a cake, it was invented in 1854 by cook Sarah Nelson inside her humble Church Cottage home - now The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. At first selling it to just villagers and local passers-by from a tree stump outside her front door, with the arrival of the railways and wealthy tourists into the Lake District, its reputation grew across the country. It is still ONLY made here 362 days a year. Visitors from all over the world flock here to buy Grasmere Gingerbread® and experience the sights and sounds of Sarah Nelson’s Victorian world. Grasmere Gingerbread® has now opened a second shop in Hawkshead which sells locally roasted artisan takeaway coffee, Grasmere Gingerbread®, award-winning Cumberland Rum Butter and an array of ginger-flavoured and ginger-themed foodstuffs and gifts.

Grasmere Gingerbread® can also be found on your tea-tray in the bedrooms at Low Wood Bay.
